On the last day of April the Indian women’s badminton team defeated Canada handily to begin their Uber Cup campaign. In the Group A opener in Chengdu, China, the youthful talents, led by skipper Ashmita Chaliha, exceeded expectations by defeating their rivals 3-0.
Chaliha’s incredible victory over Michelle Li, a former top-10 player, was the match’s high point. Chaliha showed steely mettle in a fierce battle, winning in straight games with scores of 26-24, 24-22. The tone for India’s dominance in the tie was established by her outstanding performance.
Chaliha set the example for the women’s doubles team, and Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra did not disappoint, dominating Catherine Choi and Jeslyn .
