Dressel and Katie Ledecky both performed as expected. At an Olympic Games, Ledecky encountered fierce competition for the first time. In the 400 freestyle, Australian Ariarne Titmus defeated the American freestyler; nonetheless, Ledecky, who took home the silver medal, raced the fastest 400 free since she broke the world record in Rio five years prior.

Ledecky swam one of her fastest 200 freestyle relay legs in the 4×200 free relay, despite her disappointing performance in the 200 freestyle, an event she won in Rio but placed fifth in Tokyo, where Titmus earned her second Olympic gold medal.

She managed to hold off the more fancied Australians and nearly catch China, giving the American ladies a silver medal.
